| Distance education can open the door to learning for many that thought it was closed.
Distance education is not one of our contemporary innovations. In fact, distance education has been in existence since the 19th century in the U.S in the form of mail-order correspondence courses. Using this most basic service the opportunity was provided to many that did not have access to a school to learn the material at home and at their own speed.
The technological advances during the last decade have altered the scope and structure of distance education. Over time, innovations were developed that allowed students located off campus to participate in real time. One method was conference calls, which used the telephone to convey lessons and allowed interaction in some cases. Another was videoconferencing, which enabled off-site students to view the class presentation at the same time as those physically present.
There are two major developments that have influenced the current trends in distance education. The first is the expansion and integration of the Internet into daily life. It is now possible for schools to transmit lessons and other information to students while students can easily return assignments and communicate with instructors.
The second change is the lifestyle challenges that exist in our society. The demands of modern life would appear to exclude many from continuing their education . However, the new technologies of distance education allow working people, "stay-at-home Moms", people in rural communities and disabled students to reap the benefits of the improved access to educational resources. Because of distance education there is virtually no circumstance that would prevent access to continuing education.
